Cysteamine Cream® is a novel intensive depigmenting treatment for hyperpigmentation disorders.

Cysteamine Cream® effectively removes pigmented brown and dark spots, and produces a uniform and light skin complexion. Dermatologists recommend the use of cysteamine for melasma, pregnancy mask, post-inflamatory scares, lentigo & hyper-intensive whitening.

Cysteamine has shown superiority to hydroquinone (5), which was considered to be the most effective treatment for hyperpigmentation.

Unlike hydroquinone and many skin depigmenting agents, cysteamine is also known to be an anticarcinogenic (2) and antimutagenic (3) agent. Hydroquinone use has become more and more restricted in recent years due to reports on the cancer producing effect of this agent. Hydroquinone has now been banned in several countries including European countries and Japan. Cysteamine is thus considered the best treatment alternative.


Cysteamine Cream® is the first and only skin depigmenting product that contains cysteamine as its active ingredient.

Cysteamine is naturally present in human body cells and is the product of metabolization of the amino acid L-cysteine. Cysteamine has been known since more than 5 decades as a very potent and safe skin depigmenting agent (4), significantly more potent than hydroquinone (5), but was never managed to be applied topically because of its very bad odor.

Scientis Pharma has discovered a new technology that significantly reduces the odor of cysteamine, and that now permits for the first time to develop cysteamine into a topical depigmenting cream : Cysteamine Cream®

L-cysteamine, the natural form of cysteamine, is the product of L-cysteine metabolism in the human body.(6) This molecule acts as an intrinsic antioxidant and is known for its protective role against ionizing radiation and as an antimutagenic agent.(7) Cysteamine has been shown to act not through melanocytotoxicity, but via the inhibition of melanin synthesis to produce depigmentation.(8) However, the mechanism of the inhibitory effect of cysteamine on melanin synthesis is not yet thoroughly understood.

Cysteamine is a thiol compound, and thiolic depigmenting agents are known to be inhibitors of tyrosinase and peroxidase, the two key enzymes involved in melanin biosynthesis. Thiols are also known to scavenge dopaquinone and remove it from the melanogenesis pathway. (9) Thiol molecules can act as chelators of iron and copper ions, which are implicated in Fenton reactions involved in pigment synthesis.(10) Finally, cysteamine has been shown to augment intracellular levels of glutathione.(11) Higher levels of intracellular glutathione are associated with the shift of eumelanogenesis to pheomelanin synthesis, the latter being a much slower pathway than the former. This causes the melanogenesis process to proceed at a slower rate. (12)

  1. Apply Cysteamine Cream® once daily as an evening routine to the desired skin areas on a rested skin, before washing it or one hour afterward. Washing the skin right before application may increase skin irritation.
  2. Leave it on for 15 minutes. After 6 weeks of application and only if there are no signs of skin irritation (redness, dryness etc) the daily exposure time can be gradually increased.
  3. Wash it thoroughly off the skin with water and soap, and apply a simple hydrating cream to the treated area.

The efficacy of the Cysteamine Cream® is linked to the chronicity of exposure over a period of time rather than the daily duration of exposure. Ensure that you comply strictly the daily application routine.

First depigmenting effect of Cysteamine Cream® becomes visible after 6 weeks of once-daily application. Optimal depigmenting results are achieved after 8 to 12 weeks of once-daily application. Once the desired depigmenting results are achieved, maintain the complexion with a twice weekly applications of Cysteamine Cream®.

Cysteamine Cream® can be applied regardless of the sun intensity, on any skin phototype, to the face, neck and body (including the normal skin), avoiding eye contour. As brown spots respond more rapidly to Cysteamine Cream® than the normal skin, the skin complexion becomes uniform by continuation of the treatment.


Not washing the treated area before but after the application is key to avoid undesired effects.

No significant side effects, other than light to mild irritation are reported in few cases with topical use of cysteamine. A burning sensation and mild redness might occur immediately after application and usually disappear after 30 minutes. This is a normal reaction and may happen in the first few days of treatment. In case of sustained redness, irritation or dry-skin, suspend treatment and carefully hydrate the area with a basic hydration cream. You may gradually resume treatment once the skin is balanced again — again, not washing before but after application.

Cysteamine Cream is hydroquinone-free, corticosteroid-free, paraben-free. No sulfite or sulfate salt are contained in the Cysteamine Cream®. Cysteamine is the natural product of metabolization of the amino acid cysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acids present in abondance in the human body. Once in contact with the air, the Cysteamine Cream can produce a slight sulphur-like odor. Unlike sulfite or sulfate, little evidence exists about skin intolerance to suflur-containing agents.  The Cysteamine Cream contains niacinamide (vitamin B3) which in rare cases causes skin irritation.

No study for use in pregnant and breast-feeding mothers have been conducted and hence cysteamine must not be used in these populations. Avoid using cysteamine if you, or somebody in your first-order family, suffer(s) from vitiligo. Do not mix with other treatments. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature.
